The Cannes Film Festival has commissioned 35 of the world's major directors to make short films about what it is like to go to the movies.
Gilles Jacob, the festival director, said directors were allotted three minutes and given a theme - moviegoing.
The shorts, packaged into a single film, will be screened on May 20 at the French Riviera festival, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.
Participants in the project include Roman Polanski (The Pianist), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel), the Coen Brothers (Fargo), David Cronenberg (A History Of Violence), Lars von Trier (Breaking the Waves) and Wong Kar-wai (In the Mood for Love), Jacob said.
"None of the directors has learned anything about the other shorts, not even the plots of their colleagues' movies," Jacob wrote in Le Monde newspaper's Tuesday edition.
Like festival-goers, the moviemakers will discover the final result at the Cannes screening, he wrote.
Viewers should expect some surprises.
Cronenberg, for example, shot his movie in a bathroom, Jacob said.
Director Stephen Frears (The Queen) will lead the jury at the festival, which runs from May 16 to 27.
